Help a Fellow Member in Need
In June, long-time OAHU member Sheila Hokes was diagnosed with a very large tumor in her eye. Within 2 weeks, vision in this eye was almost lost and she underwent surgery to remove the eye and tumor. The surgery was successful, but unfortunately, once the biopsy was done, it was diagnosed as UV Melanoma and it had gone into her blood stream. This is a very rare type of melanoma with no cure at this time. There are experimental drugs that can help slow down the growth of additional tumors and hopefully prevent it from spreading to key organs. Unfortunately, with the drugs being experimental, they are not covered by current insurance. The cost of the experimental drugs over 6 to 8 months will be about $60,000.00. This does not include the out-of-pocket costs she will incur for additional tests that are not covered by insurance.
Sheila has been an OAHU member for 7 years, Ohio PAC chair for 5 years, CAHU Pac chair for 4 years, attended 4 Capitol Conferences and numerous Day at the Statehouses to help make a difference for our organization. We are reaching out to the OAHU membership for any donations to help pay for her treatment.
